The Design Studio

The Studio space for Ellen Walker Design Group was conceived for business growth and to be a comfortable and professional space to meet clients in. As well, I wanted to create an inspiring and fun space to work in. I really wanted to design and build a studio that felt unique, professional, comfortable, inviting, and that inspired creativity.

Why We Love This

  • Infused with Influences from travels particularly in France, antique items, industrial/modern elements, and classic design. Having previously worked with a salvage supplier, we obtained some reclaimed hand hewn white oak timbers originally from a barn in Michigan from the mid to late 1800’s.
  • A hotel I had previously stayed in Paris had a very old stone wall in the basement of the hotel's restaurant, which influenced the design. I never forgot that wall. I had a local stone mason create the feature wall from photos I had gathered. Instead of the concrete floor, we used large format tiles that have a similarity to ground concrete floors.
  • I sourced an antique door from France and a metal filigree hand forged iron piece originally from France, but came from a building in Alexandria - both from the late 1800’s. We lovingly restored the door using original and new door hardware.
  • The space was designed with enough desk room, a work table and cabinets. The floor is porcelain tile to resemble a concrete floor and flows straight into the washroom with a curbless shower. Natural stone tiles in a basket weave were used on an entire back wall in the bathroom for dramatic and moody punch with full tiles going to the ceiling. A floating vanity with chevron pattern in walnut was designed to create a modern space. An oversized mirror was installed above the vanity to for scale. Finishes were combined with antique gray, blue/gray, off whites, stainless, black, natural wood windows, and antique brass touches in the light fixtures. There's also plenty of storage space for samples and client projects.

Challenges and Wins

  • Challenge – we needed to remove 33 very large and small trees to make room. We had to figure out how to bring power and water to the building without tearing up years of beautiful mature landscaping --Until someone suggested directional drill. Once we discovered that, I immediately started planning.
  • Win - A combination of colours were used – industrial grays, off-whites and soft warm blue-grays. Cabinets are in a clean lined style in soft Pale Oak colour, and a Riftcut Natural Oak with a very subtle white wash. A custom table was designed and made from a solid Riftcut White Oak slab with subtle white wash as well. Base was made to bring in an industrial working vibe.
  • Win - I found a unique mirror made from an original “dough bowl” from a visit to High Point Furnishings Market a few years ago that was such a perfect piece. With a love of pottery, some of my pieces are also displayed. Pottery is something I definitely plan on pursuing again - when work isn’t as busy!
  • Win - Clients who came in have said that it's very professional and that they love the way it looks so much that they can't wait to come back for a visit.

Edmonton Guest House

This 12,000 square foot space was designed with healing, restoration and comfort at its core. With 8 guest suites and their own accompanying bath suites, the Edmonton Guest House simultaneously has both a residential space and a hospitality component for guests to live, eat, rest and heal. Designed as a reprieve from cancer treatment, both patients and their families live with volunteers who spend their days filling the halls with laughter and making the home hospitable and cozy. The community based home is a place to gather and heal together; sharing both in collective struggles and the joys, all while in this warm and inviting space.

Why We Love This

  • Drawing inspiration from elements such as wood and stone, the space is homey, inviting, warm and comfortable all while using durable materials that can stand the test of time and that age gracefully.
  • We worked with local artists to create bespoke art pieces for the space including a wall quilt piece and multiple one of kind wall decorations.
  • All materials, finishes and furnishings were thoughtfully selected to meet the requirements of a healing and comforting place for guests.

Challenges and Wins

  • Challenge - an entire 6 days straight of installation. We allowed no one onsite except our team, some volunteers, art installers, movers and companies to clean the space. The grand reveal was worth it!
  • Challenge - Working to decorate the space without it being ‘fancy’. This allowed us to work with local artists to create homey and bespoke pieces.
  • Win - In hosting an open house tour, there was overwhelming emotional feedback that the home felt warm, inviting and comforting. Hearing people say that it felt healing as well was good for the soul. We nailed the mandate and the feeling was incredible!

Restaurant - Mohave Smokehouse and Bar

The owner of the restaurant was looking to rebrand his outdated 5600 sq ft Mexican themed restaurant into a 'Smokehouse' vibe featuring a new interior with a new menu.

During the research and design phase we reimagined the space to reflect a new look and vibe to fulfill the owner's desire. We imagined a casual, industrial feel. The restaurant was completely gutted and the space was divided into a new casual family dining section and a Bar/Lounge section. Using a combination of reclaimed wood materials, brick, new millwork, vintage and industrial materials, booths, tables, chairs (furniture, wall accent pieces and a wine feature wall, we were able to successfully update the entire interior according to the mandate required). Large Mirrors were used to reflect light and enhance the industrial feel. Above the booths for the bar/lounge area, we suspended industrial style wooden wheels with exposed bulb pendants through the spokes to provide a unique and cozier feeling while sitting in the booth. In the restaurant area, we used reclaimed wood and built ladders above the booths along the windows with light pendants dropped over each booth table.

Why We Love This

We worked with a Salvage company for the extensive use of reclaimed wood materials throughout. Screen dividers between the restaurant and lounge area were originally from a cattle fence. The wood was rubbed smooth and shiny from cattle rubbing up against it. The extensive use of old style brick was used to resurface the walls for an industrial feel.Unique industrial lighting pendants and fixtures were used throughout to add to the aesthetic. An original fireplace was removed and a wall of old white peeling reclaimed wood shrouded the original structure to provide raised banquette seating. A complete old building on a homestead was dismantled particularly for this project along with fir from old grain elevators.

Challenge

Once planning details were finalized, the restaurant was completely renovated and furnished within a month and open for business as a newly branded restaurant. The owner did not want to lose any downtime for business. The entire restaurant was completed in one month. The owner was able to remain open by hoarding off the two areas and completing and keeping one area open for business at a time. In the end the owner only lost two days of business due to washrooms needing to be closed for renovations as well. This project kept us hopping with lots of questions, verification of details, and site visits in order to keep the fast pace moving forward and meeting the timeline.

Win

We completed the entire project on time. We had numerous feedback from customers who have frequented the establishment on the whole feel and look - they were thrilled with the results. The owner was also very happy with the turnout and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have worked on such a complex, but beautiful project.

ESC Project Management

I had the privilege of working with Ellen Walker on the Edmonton Mennonite Guest Home. Ellen is an extraordinary designer! What amazed me was her knowledge of different materials including wood, flooring, upholstery, blinds, glass, door hardware, paint, tile, and cabinets etc. We were wanting a guest home that felt like a home but had the durability of a commercial building. She was able to suggest products that had longevity, felt like home, and worked within our budget. All the items Ellen chose were backed with solid reasons...

Alberta Art Installation

I had the pleasure of working with Ellen Walker at a recent hospitality project where design and its implications on guests mattered. Fostering and developing ideas from Historic footnotes of the Alberta Mennonite Community was a paramount concern. Integrating these important aspects within a modern-day project was certainly achieved; with seamless contemporary styling, unbuffered warmth with rooms that were beautifully inviting without triteness or obligation to souvenir-hunt by contributing thematic bobbles to satisfy a client...
